siah wei's reflection on two articles

Article 1
I read about 'Planking, which caused the life of some dude who fell down from the 17 floor. Alright, planking is about nevermind I have pictures, then I describe it alright?
Good. Now this picture is showing a guy lying down on a signboard, so If he falls off all he gets is just broken limbs and a concussion.Alright pretend I was not sarcastic. Moving on, In general, planking is where a person lies down on somewhere dangerous, like a balcony on the 17th floor of a building, or just simply on the road. They take visual evidence, then post it. Kind of like a daredevil club. No, wait, more like a Suicide club. That's it. I mean, what's the point. You get a picture. So what? I don't know, you got to ask them what's going on in their minds.

Article 2
I read about the article titled 'Justin bieber haters lash out'. We all know he has been hated quite a lot, but recently it has just been getting too serious. I do not really agree with Bieber rising to fame too quickly and as a result getting humiliated. No. Personally, I feel that it was because his voice was a little too high pitched... Anyway, I may have enjoyed the jokes about him, but what I just saw on that article, seems acceptable, but imagine, these rumors have actually been believed to be true! So it is not just a half-decent rumor being spread (nobody knows if it is true), but there have been people who gang up on him. Now that, is not nice. Nobody, not even the person I hate most should receive that. That has been going too far, thats all I am saying. And I you disagree, put your opinion in the Comments Section below

Hao Ming's Reflection on Two Articles

The first article which I am doing a reflection on is about Malaysia's economy. This article had talked about the present Malaysian economy and especially about the business there. Malaysia had been criticised of sending out mixed signals, but Talent Corporation Chief Johan Mahmood Merican insists that it was normal to have different groups to make their voices heard in 'thriving democracy'. The Talent Corporation was set up in January 2011 to undertake the task of searching for new specialised and experienced workers to be employed for the businesses in Malaysia. Mr Johan said that it was not easy to find such workers and the results proved so. This company had released a total of 2 schemes, and 1 scheme is about searching for new and specialised foreign workers, including those Malaysians who became the PRs of the other countries. The other scheme is to search for specialised workers from abroad their country itself (local workers).

However, the search did not prove very successful because in the past decade, there were only a total of 750 specialised workers from the latter scheme (local workers). This is not enough for Malaysia, which has 80% of the workers as those who only got a certificate from university only. Because of this, the Talent Corporation is still trying to find more new and better ways to attract specialised workers to carry out business in Malaysia. They are trying to learn from the economy of Singapore, their neighbouring country. Singapore has been a successful country in attracting specialised foreign workers. And now, people are complaining that Malaysia are following the other countries (in terms of economy), but Johan denied that and said it was up to the President or the Prime Minister. However, although Malaysia' economy is not very good, they still have other international competitive resources like oil and coal. Oil and coal are the natural resources which are commonly found in Malaysia and each have many uses.

This article is found in the 'Straits Times' Section of the Monday Newspaper, on Page A9 under 'World'.

The second article which I am reflecting about is on the ways to deal with emotions in the cyber realm. There are many people who are playing games on their computer, especially violent ones, but at the same time they may not notice that they are actually offending and hurting others. Anger and hurt could also be expressed in video games rather than in the real world itself, and sometimes this hurt that is caused can actually offend other gamers more badly than when it is caused in real life. In the world of people who play games, they include the players, and these players can include 'kill-stealers', gankers, griefers, and spawn campers, and of course, others. 'Kill-stealers' are those people who get the credit from their games without even doing anything. For example, some other player may be fighting a monster or another soldier, and is almost about to finish it, but suddenly another player, without the permission of this player (who has been fighting the monster or the soldier), jumps in and finish it with a final blow to get the credit. This will not only give him the credit and experience, it will also cause the player who has been fighting these monsters to waste their time, and therefore a grudge will occur between the 2 players. Gankers are those players who have a high level character and looks down on others. These players will normally use their character to fight those lower-level characters repeatedly, for the fun of it; they know their high-level character is able to beat the lower-level ones.

Griefers are actually the same as 'kill-stealers', but instead of calling them 'kill-stealers', it will be better to call them griefers. Griefers are those people who kill-steal other people, and also kill others' characters or behave badly just for the fun of it, as they can annoy the other players. However, they do not notice that they are actually hurting these players and may cause a grudge. This huge grudge may cause the other players to be tempted to take revenge on this annoying player, by either forming a gang from their characters to fight against this player's character, or by doing somethings which will hurt him in real life. These things may include the shaming the annoying player (offender) in public by telling other players about him in the in-game chat window. Lastly, spawn camping is an action of waiting at the area where another player is being resurrected and killing him while he is still unprepared. Spawn campers are those players who does these. Therefore, it is important not to irritate and offend other people on video games. But, at the same time, it is also important for the people who are offended to resist and not continue to get revenge on the offenders. As we all know, kill-stealing is considered as a form of harassment in online video games (for the offenders), and shaming the offender in public is also another form of harassment (for those players who were offended and eager to take revenge).

This article is found on the 'in' section of the Monday Newspaper. It is found on Page 8, titled 'Dealing with emotions in the cyber realm'. The definitions of 4 words in the article are at the bottom of the page.

Article 1
Prime:Page A4:Influence of MM, SM will continue to be felt:Analysts
MM Lee's and SM Goh's contributions to Singapore's development are great and huge, and if they stay on in the cabinet, I personally feel that they can contribute more to Singapore, just like how analysts say that they are vital to SIngapore's relationship with China, India and the middle east. They both have forged great relationships with the countries, and should stay on, perhaps in another postion to keep those ties healthy. To sum it all, I would think it would be a great loss to Singapore if they did really retire.

Article 2
World:Page A10:Taleban using Twitter in propaganda war
This is interesting, because the Taleban had once banned all forms of media, but now it is fighting its war on Twitter. Apparently a check on their account reveals that they are tweeting about casualties that are caused by them, and one of them, as of 1:30, is that an IED(Improvised Explosive Device) had destroyed an American tank. Apparently the Taleban embrace technology and claim is as "a gift from god". Personally, if the Taleban were not a terrorist organisation, I would think that this is a good move, to reach out to more people using what the "enemy"–The U.S.–invented.

Reflections-Matthias Lee 13

The first article I chose was the article titled "Chelsea fell the blues as Magpies level".This can be found on page B7.This article is about a football match which was held yesterday. The two teams are Chelsea and Newcastle United(A.K.A Magpies). The final match result was 1-1,a draw. The article was talking about Chelsea's poor form currently. They have lost Manchester United just last week and now, they lost their chance for a last and final win for this season.Although they dominated the match, they did not turn their chances and opportunities into goals. As a Newcastle Fan,I am happy with the result.Being a team that just got promoted into this league,we managed to draw with the previous champions and this is something all Newcastle fans should be proud of.Chelsea scored the first goal, leading 1-0.Then Newcastle drew when Ryan Talyor(Newcastle) took a free-kick and it deflected off another off his teammate. The deflected ball flew into the opponent's net. This was a unintentional goal by Guteirrez. The third goal was by Chelsea,Lampard(Chelsea) took a free kick and his team mate,Alex, headed the ball into the opponents net, hence Chelsea were leading again, this time 2-1.At the last few seconds before the match ended,Steven Taylor(Newcastle) headed the ball into the opponents luck. This was sheer luck as he was at the right place at the right time. This goal was scored just twenty seconds before the match ended. The final result was 2-2.

The Second article was the Yam Ah Mee Articled title"He's so Yam-my".This article talks about jokes that are made about him in the internet. His face was photoshopped into mugs,cups,t-shirts and into some images too, such as James Bond.

Ray Newspaper Article thing: Lim Hwee Hua quits politics and cabinet

Number of women in Cabinet back at zero: Pages A1 and A4

Lim Hwee Hua admitted defeat in the Aljunied with her quitting politics, a day right after Foreign Minister George Yeo quitted. Mrs Lim was the Minister in the Prime Minister's Office and the second minister for Finance and Transport.

Saying on her "farewell speech", she said that by 5 years, she would be 57, and that she would like others younger than her to take over. She feels that the WP will take care of Aljunied well, and that she tried her best to understand the residents previously.

Well, the real question is, there was no real valid reason of why she quitted, same with MM Lee, SM Goh, and George Yeo. They did not explain the reason why they quitted. They must be up to something. Hmm.

Da Awesome Newspaper Article reading (Tai Chen Yu 17)

Firstly, the news about MM Lee and SM Goh's retirement from parliament. These two men were great leaders of Singapore and were the very people that brought us from a 3rd world country that was 'destined' to die and that had no future into the 1st world country we now know. According to the news article, this is a sign that PAP is taking the results from the recent GE and is branding itself with the younger generation. However, I feel that instead of feeling sad for them, we should feel sad for ourselves instead. This because WE are losing two good leaders and in place we get the likes of Tin Pei Ling and several unseasoned and still wet behind the ears ministers to represent us in parliament. So its our lost. Singapore just lost two pioneer fathers that help built up whatever we have today and our taxes that we pay goes into these 'trainees' instead of the seasoned and trailed ministers.

Secondly, the news about Yam Ah Mee, our RO Extraordinate. This man managed to accomplish the almost impossible feat of a robotic face, expression and voice for say 30 minutes? As reported, several netizens almost immediately took the opportunity to do remixes and add several effects into his famed ' Pursuant to Section 49, sub-section 7e, paragraph A of the parliamentary election act....' speech. And instantly our dear Yam found new fame whether desired or not overnight. All I have to say is...LOL

Abram's 2 Article Readings

The first article that I read was the 'Masked riders hog priority seats'. From this article, we know that there are people out there apart from not giving up their seats to others who need it, but also go to the extent of wearing masks and other 'indicators' that they think would allow them the right to have the seat. I think that we should have some thoughts for people in need of the seats because I am sure that they, too want the seat as badly as we do. However, they need the seat rather than want, or maybe both. Therefore, we should always give up our seats to those who need it more!

The second article that I read was the 'More being done to keep kids trim'. This article is about the obese children in Singapore. The article tells us that the Health Promotion Board is taking action to reduce the advertising of less-healthy foods. The reason behind this is that quite a percentage of children in Singapore are obese and the main cause is junk food. I think that from this article, we can understand that junk food is not good for us and as well as the effects it has done to some children. So we should eat less junk food and become a healthier person!

Comments on articles

The first article that I found was, Diana film at Cannes slams UK royals as 'gangsters. This article interested me as it gives a different perspective about the death of Princess Diana and other members of the royal family. The second article that I found was, S'poreans confident PM Lee can overcome Cabinet losses. I feel that ministers exit could be a good thing. With the change of government, there would be a new perspective to the problems and issues that Singapore faces. Sometimes, a new and different perspective is needed for progress and improvement to happen.

Ray Newspaper Article thing: SM Goh and MM Lee retiring

Exit of MM Lee and SM Goh, Pages A1, A6 and A7

Recently, the two ministers' exiting of the cabinet has been a hot topic lately. Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew had decided that they are leaving the cabinet, and not wanting to work as ministers anymore.

I feel neutral(happy) to this matter. The exiting of the cabinet shows that the People's Action Party(PAP) is losing power to Singapore, as the ministers needed to quit their jobs as ministers and devote all of their time as MPs at their constituencies. This is because on the May 7 General Election, the PAP's vote share went to 60.1%, from 70-80% in the last 20 years. Also, having lost Aljunied GRC by the Worker's Party, the PAP had decided to devote all their time to save their land that will slowly be taken away by the opposition by the next 10 years.

I feel that we should not pity Ex-SM Goh and Ex- MM Lee for quitting. In fact, we should be the ones pitying ourselves. Singaporeans worked so hard trying to keep up with the growth of the economy and make money, pay GST, taxes, fines, ERPs, etc. How about them? They are so filthy rich, earning millions by a year of their jobs, just by governing their land, and literally drinking coffee and shaking their legs while on the job. MM Lee and SM Goh can choose not to work anymore, and still have enough money to live until the rest on their lives.

However, the burning question is why now, and not 5 years later, said SPP secretary-general Chaim See Tong. Opposition leaders says that there should be a by-election for the SM and MM positions. They feel that it is good that they step down, well basically because they save up to S$15 million in government salaries.

Daniel Tan article comments

The first article I read was the "Justin Beiber haters lash out" article. This article is about why Justin Beiber is hated and it also has some fokes about him. I found the jokes amusing but I feel that Justin Beiber is getting too hated. Although I myself is not a fan of Justin Beiber and his bushy-like hair, I feel that we should not do this kind of stuff to him as different people have different likes and dislikes. We should keep out opinions of him in mind and not start spreading it like wildfire especially in the internet.
The second article I read was about the "He's so Yam-my" article. Which is about Mr Yan Ah Mee who is the Returning Officer of the Singapore General Elections 2011 and about his increasing fame over the net due to his funny voice while reading out the results. I feel that although it is good and funny that Mr Yam is getting more famous, I think that he himself should have some privacy.

ODS's reflections

This reflection is based on last thursday's paper. The "IN" paper, page 20,9.

1st article : Pokemon has influenced us from young, a part of our childhood. A comic in Japan soon became world reknowned after television programmes, comic books and games are published from stalls all over the world. It is still advancing and upgrading now, people racking their brains creating new chapter, storyline, chracters, etc. It seems to be an endless trend. However, on the article, it speaks of the pokemon's characteristics. The advancement of Pokemon battle, moves, conditions, type, abilities and battle choices have improved greatly since its release. There are up to 649 pokemons currently, still encounting. This shows the endless amount of creativity flowing from the creators of them. Although losing interest in Pokemons and remember everyone of them, I will always remember the pokemon of old generations.

2nd article : Justin Bieber is now a world hit. I have not heard of him till this year, but rumors are terrorising his reputation. I think this will have to stop, I am sure Justin put in hard work to be this famous, however, getting hit by numerous rumors are not good for his reputation. Yes, I do agree that his songs are not much of any interesting. I would prefer Taylor Swift, Thousand Foot Krutch than him. However, starting out bad is not all that bad. Rebecca Black, infamously known for the new song, "Friday". That song is crappy, however, I hear more people singing "Friday" and "Baby" than "Enchanted". This may be the best way to publised. Making the consumer publicise for the author.

Article Comments by Izzat Syahmi

Article 1: for skateboarders, by skateboarders
It is getting into the trend of teenagers skateboarding as a pastime, and now more are getting serious and trying to make it into a legitimate sport. It is quite interesting to know that there is also a skateboarding club in Singapore Polytechnic. I feel that it is good that teenagers aren't afraid to voice out what could be improved of their skateparks. This shows as they have a strong passion for their interest, and also would try to maintain safety for themselves and also others.

Article 2: Spotlight on the Subheroes
I am quite interested to know what superhero could be in another movie. I never get tired in watching fictional shows that are good and fast-paced to watch, such as superhero movies. It has been said that all the good superheroes already have their own movies, and now, it seems that people are figuring out what other not-so-famous hero could be in their own movie, and if it would be an interesting one that everyone would enjoy.

Jonathan (12) Article Reflections

1st article : The first article I read about was the article on an Australian man who died because of his 'planking' stunt. The article states that planking has become a new craze for people. Planking involves a person lying flat on their abdomen with their arms on their bodies, sometimes in unusual positions. There are photographs on the Internet showing off many people's planking stunts. However, one young man had decided to plank on a balcony, with the result of him falling to his death. Personally, while I do pity the young man, I do find this a little meaningless. People are risking their lives doing stunts that endanger their lives just to get a picture of it, post it on Facebook and show off their stunts. I find it really a waste of their time, energy, and in this case, life.

2nd article : The second article I read about was the resignation of SM Goh and MM Lee. While there are many saying that their resignation would be a 'waste of their talents' and that both still have 'more to contribute', I feel that this decision really depends on their own feelings. Both have spent a long amount of time helping shape Singapore, and I feel that if they want to take a break, then they have well deserved one. While I do agree that they could continue contributing to Singapore with their knowledge and skills, I feel the best way would be for them to continue serving in a 'behind-the-scene' manner. While it could be true that it is time for the younger generation to lead Singapore, the younger generation would need guidance from the elders, and I feel that SM Goh and MM Lee could help with that.

"Planking stunt" leads to death fall in Australia

This articles is about how a person participating in the internet craze "planking" dies due to the activity.Planking is where a person lies on the ground, face down with their arms against their bodies at strange locations such as escalators,or even train tracks. In this article, someone dies from trying to "plank" on a balcony, leading to his death. I feel that this article is very informative about the dangers of planking.A person actually died from this.Planking in my opinion,is a very dumb activity,to subject one selves to danger like that.

Article Comments

Article 1: Some feel pace of change is too fast(Prime Page A6)
I feel that the leaving of two past leaders of Singapore has bought different reactions from both the political and public arena.

As two of Singapore's past prime minister have stepped down from their political post, I personally feel that this decision was to be made a long time ago. Yes indeed their experience was needed in parliament to lead the new younger ministers, but a special post should not have been made for them. Just a thought, if these posts were not abolished, and current PM Lee steps down from prime ministership, what would be the new title for current MM Lee? Their experience should be shared on non-political basis.

But from the Straits times repots, the people staying in Tanjong Pagar and Marine Parade continue to stay supportive of these two leaders in their own GRC. Although they have relinquished their posts as Cabinet ministers, they are still MPs.

Indeed the opposition party has made a big commotion about their stepping down to have been made before elections begun, but I feel that their mentorship was needed for the new contestants like Ms Tin Pei Ling and Mr Tan Chuan-Jin, the two most talked about new members of parliament from the PAP party. The leaving of these two power houses in cabinet would affect PM Lee's organization of the Cabinet and furthermore, the lost of two cabinet ministers Mr George Yeo and Ms Lim Hwee Hwa. Other factor's affecting his decision would be the leaving of cabinet ministers Mr S Jayakumar and Mr Lim Boon Heng.

The stepping down of MM Lee and SM Goh would definitely make space for the new cabinet and PM Lee would definitely have more freedom to choose his new cabinet.

Article 2: The rise of woman in Indian politics(Prime page A11)
I believe over the past 11 years into this century, woman have made an impact not only in India, but throughout the rest of the world. I believe when the issue of woman as leaders is raised, names like Michelle Obama the wife of President Barack Obama, Oprah Winfrey the richest African American woman in USA, Angela Merkel Chancellor of Germany, Julia Gillard Prime Minister of Australia and many others. Today's topic is about the rise in power of woman in India. People like Ms Mamata Banerjee, Ms J. Jayalalithaa, Ms Mayawati and Ms Sheila Dixit have played important roles in being leaders of parties or chief ministers. The report shows that woman now "rule" close to 1/3 of India. Thats about 400 million!

My view of this is that woman making impacts on India provide a perspective view in the government rather than letting the decisions all be made by men. Taking into perspective the Singapore cabinet, currently the number of woman cabinet ministers is back to zero because of the General Elections that caused Mr George Yeo's team to be "kicked out" of parliament. I believe that woman should have a say in affairs of the world as this world is shared by both genders and getting a woman's perspective is an alternate view as men might sometimes make decisions without the views of woman. Although the world has more men than woman, but it is only by a fraction.

Ming Yong's reflections

The article i found was the one on Yam Ah Mee. In the article he is depicted as a new internet star as many people were amazed at his speaking capabilities at the 2011 general election. His ability to remain calm and speak with clarity and empowerment under the watchful stares of hundreds of thousands of civilians and reporters was a feat truly to be respected. Thus, he has become an internet star and many people are making parodies and articles about his famous line, "pursuant to section 49, subsection 7E of the parliamentary election act...". However, looking at Yam Ah Mee's perspective, he might not feel so comfortable having these things exist on the internet and may feel akward or angry due to these viral, funny instances.

In Section (12/5/2011) Bevan Koo

I am going to discuss on two articles on the IN section dated 12 May 2011. The first article I would like to talk about is regarding the
Masked Riders who hog priority seats
Since the start of MRT(Mass Rapid Transport), many Singaporeans and tourists use it to bring them to school, work or places of interest. It is cheap and fast too. Since Singapore is currently facing the aging population problem, there are more senior citizens in the society. This problem led to having more elderly on public transport and requires a seat for their journey. These few years, commuters have taken photo of inconsiderate passengers who would sleep and the elderly would not be given priority to seat. Seats given priority to the elderly and pregnant women would not be given to them as commuters used ways like sleeping and wearing a mask to prevent their seats being taken away.

A closer look at Singapore fashion
Do you see many sloppy dressers in shopping malls nowadays. Sloppy dressing includes slippers and singlets where it is very common these days. This is due to less amount of money that is spend on clothing on average. Singaporean spend an average of $326 on clothing annually compared to countries which spend $400 and above like Taiwan, Japan and Korea. Actually you can get fashionable clothing at good deals when there is the Great Singapore Sale which is coming soon. Another way is E-shopping where you can get clothing at cheaper prices.

Comments on Article

1) S'poreans confident PM Lee can overcome Cabinet losses.
Although the loss of SM Goh and MM Lee was a huge loss to the Cabinet, and was one of the most shocking moments in Singapore history, I think that it is for the better of the new MPs, for a new start for the parliament, and I personally believe that they can definitely overcome the losses, if they try hard enough.

2) Gamble of pay-per-bid online auctions catches on.
I personally think that it is not a good idea to do so, as if you do not win the bid, you might end up losing a lot of money, and if you are very unlucky, it might happen for the next few bids, and you have bit off more than you can chew, losing more money than saving them.

Newspaper article Brendon Goh

This article is from The Straight Times, Home section, under sports in the paper for 16 of may 2011.

The title of this article is Tampines keep perfect home record.

This piece of news is about Singapore soccer league, also known as S League. It comes right after yesterday night when Tampines Rovers won 3 - 1 against Albirex Niigata. It talks about this match and the events during the match. It also stated that Tampines continue their winning streak at home ground, 4 times so far. The pitch was good despite being used for the elections, and this was because why only 4 matches were played on home ground.

Tampines is now top of the table with 13 matches played, 10 wins, 3 draws and no losses with 33 points, 4 points ahead of the next team, Home United.

I feel that it has been a long time since tampines last won the title, and now it is top of the table, it is on the way to winning it. The standard of soccer in Singapore is getting higher and more and more difficult, especially for Tampines since they lost a number of good players, including Noh Alam Shah, Mystafic Fahrudin and Sutee Suksomkit. However, despite this, Tampines had also gained better players, like Aleksandar Duric. Now that they are doing very well in the S league, I hope they can continue to do so and eventually win the title.

1st article : From England, Manchester United just won their 19th league title. They really deserved it after a hard fight against blackburn rovers on saturday. They were actually losing by 1-0 but they caught up by scoring another goal.

2nd Article. Yam-my I think is really interesting as from a solemn event of the GE to a great hit on the internet. Yam Ah Mee is an officer that declared the winners of the GE and now, people use that clips for remixing of what he said into a song.

Activity 3: Analysis of Letter by Abram Tan (01)

Dear Congressman

I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state.  As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident, I am writing to urge you to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot.
-Pathos and ethos are used in the first paragraph to show how the writer views the congressman and which could determine whether the congressman would continue to read or be interested in the letter.
The problem with guns is fairly straightforward: they make it easy to kill or injure a person. Did you know that, according to the F.B.I., approximately 60 percent of all murder victims in the United States in 1994 (about 16,000 people) were killed with firearms? According to estimates, firearm attacks injured another 70,000 victims, some of whom were left permanently disabled. In 1985 (the latest year for which this particular data is available), the cost of shootings--either by others, through self-inflicted wounds, or in accidents--was estimated to be more than $14 billion nationwide for medical care, long-term disability, and premature death. It is much higher now. -Logos is used in the third paragraph. The writer has used real numbers and solid facts to try to convince the congressman that he is right.
One of the problems with making it easier for citizens to have handguns is that in robberies and assaults, victims are far more likely to die when the perpetrator is armed with a gun than when he or she has another weapon or is unarmed.  Opponents of gun control will say that this does not matter because most criminals buy their guns on the black market.  However, not only do a number of criminals purchase guns legally, but the majority of those that do purchase them on the black market are buying guns that were purchased legally and then stolen—ones that would therefore not be on the black market if our gun control laws were more strict to begin with. Did you know that residents of homes where a gun is present are 5 times more likely to experience a suicide than residents of homes without?  The fact remains that a gun makes it easier to commit suicide in a fit of rage, depression, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. -Ethos is used here because the writer uses questions and facts to show that he is knowledgeable in this topic.
Self-defense is commonly cited as a reason to own a gun. This is the explanation given by 20 percent of all gun owners and 40 percent of all handgun owners contacted for a household survey conducted in 1999.  However research has shown that a gun kept in the home is 43 times more likely to kill a member of the household, or friend, than an intruder.  Furthermore, when a civilian tries to use a firearm to resist a violent assault, it actually increases the victim's (civilian’s) risk of injury and death. -Ethos is used  again because the writer uses questions and facts to show that he is knowledgeable in this topic.

A study of 743 gunshot deaths by Dr. Arthur Kellermann and Dr. Donald Reay published in The New England Journal of Medicine found that 84% of these homicides occurred during fights in the home. Only 2 of the 743 gunshot deaths occurring in the home involved an intruder killed during an attempted entry.  The evidence revealed in the Kellermann study is consistent with data reported by the FBI.  In 1993, there were 24,526 people murdered, 13,980 with handguns, yet only 251 justifiable homicides by civilians using handguns.
-Logos is used again in the fifth paragraph. Many already proven facts and numbers have been used to persuade the congressman.
The reason that I have such an intense interest in this topic is that my son was killed by a gun (not my own) that belonged to a person who only wanted to protect his household, but it fell into the hands of a child by mistake.  Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur? -Pathos was used in the sixth paragraph. The presence of personal details and feelings indicate that it is pathos.
Knowing all this, do you really think we can continue to allow citizens to buy guns so easily?  If we continue making it so easy, our nation will continue to have gun-related domestic fatalities.  I believe in our rights as citizens of the United States, especially the right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  These rights are unquestionably threatened by making it easy for the common citizen to buy a gun. Please, please vote for stricter laws. -The writer uses Logos in the last paragraph as he does not want citizens to be able to buy guns that easily and backs it up with logical information. The writer claims that he wants guns not to be bought that easily and states that his country will continue to have problems with guns if they continue to allow easy access to guns. He also stated that the rights of the citizens are threatened by allowing guns.
Yours sincerely
John Simmons

Activity 3 - Analysis of Letter by Tan Hao Ming (18)

Dear Congressman

I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state.  As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident, I am writing to urge you to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot.
The sender or the writer of this letter (John Simmons) used ethos over here as he wrote this paragraph with appropriate level of vocabulary and grammar. His language was also appropriate to the audience (Congressman) as well as the subject. One example is that he used ‘I am hoping that you continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state’, and the Congressman will be able to understand what he is trying to convey to him. He also wrote about his reasons for writing the letter, and this paragraph was in the form of a sincere one (He was requesting the Congressman to support the gun control legislation for him). He also demonstrated and showed some respect for the Congressman.
John Simmons used pathos in this paragraph of the letter. He wrote about an emotional event (his child was being killed in a gun accident) and there was an emotional change. The emotional change was the part where he was talking about the good impression he had on the Congressman about his past voting record, but suddenly he changed the topic into his child being killed in a gun accident. This is the same as praising the Congressman  first (appeals to the Congressman’s emotions) and then changing the language to a sad event (the Congressman will change his emotion - to become feeling so sad to hear about the loss of the child). His language was emotionally loaded as throughout it will give the Congressman different kinds of feelings.
John Simmons used ethos, pathos and logos in the paragraph. He used ethos when he wrote out all the information which he had gathered about murder victims, about firearm attacks, medical care and long-term disability. He used the correct level of vocabulary and grammar over here too and he explained everything in a very clear way. He also used pathos, since he included some emotional examples in this paragraph and he showed vivid and concrete language. On example of this is ‘Did you know that’, in this, it produces strong feelings for the reader (the Congressman) while reading it.
Lastly, he used logos too when he showed reasons of why he thinks that the Congressman should support the gun control legislation for him. He also showed some statistics which he had for the murder victims in their country in 1994 which were killed with firearms. These statistics also included the number of injured victims in firearm attacks and also the cost of the shootings in 1985. He used all these statistics to support his own views on firearms and why he thinks these type of accidents should be prevented by requesting the Congressman to support the gun control legislation. As the Congressman reads the letter, he will realised that there were many people disabled, killed and injured in the past few decades and he knows he had to stop this.

He used ethos, pathos and a bit of logos in this paragraph. He used ethos as he showed his knowledge about the problems which citizens with handguns will have and also how are these problems caused. For example, one of the problems is that it will be easier for those with handguns to handle or start a robbery or an assault, because the victims of such crimes are usually more likely to die when these citizens who are creating the trouble have handguns. Even though the victim may be armed with another weapon, they may still be killed. From this, he is trying to convey to the Congressman that the guns are more dangerous than the other weapons.
He used pathos and logos as he mentioned that the residents of homes where a gun is present are 5 times more likely to experience suicide than those without, and he mentioned that these suicides may be caused by a fit of rage, depression and even under drugs and alcohol. After reading this, the Congressman will definitely want to stop making it easier for citizens to have handguns, as he will not want people to commit suicide or experience it. He also does not want more victims of assaults and robberies.
He used ethos and logos in this paragraph. He used ethos as he mentioned that a gun kept in home (from research) is 43 times more likely to kill a member of the household, a friend, rather than an intruder. He also mentioned that when a civilian is using guns as self defense, when he is trying to resist a violent assault by an intruder, it may actually increase the risk of the civilian being injured and killed. In this, when the Congressman read the letter, he will feel that a lot of people will be killed if he does not support the gun control legislation. Therefore, he will definitely want to support it to prevent more people from being killed. Stricter Laws, Lesser Black Markets, Lesser Gun Owners, Lesser Intruders and then Lesser people being killed.
For logos, he used it in this paragraph when he talk about in 1999, 20% of the gun owners and 40% of handgun owners explained that they bought and own a gun for self defense. This shows that the other 80% of the gun owners and 60% of the handgun owners do not own it for self defense, they may own it to intrude households and commit crimes, or  just bought it for nothing. Mostly of them will still use it to intrude households and commit crimes, so when the Congressman knows about it, he will once again support the gun control legislation because he will gather that there are more gun owners who are committing crimes then those who are using guns for self defense. And, the previous  part of this paragraph also makes an effect on this, because when he read the previous part, he will find out that owning a gun for self defense can actually increase the risk of the victim dying or being injured when there is an assault.
In this paragraph, he used ethos and logos again. He used ethos when he showed that he had the knowledge to convince the Congressman to support the gun control legislation, and one part of his knowledge in this paragraph was that he showed that 2 of the 743 gunshot deaths occurring in homes involved an intruder being killed during an attempted entry. Another one was when he showed that the evidence was revealed in the Kellermann study which is consistent with the data reported by the FBI. This will show the Congressman that he had done a lot of research before and that he is requesting him to support the gun control legislation, because he express out all the data and statistics which he had, and this is a show of logos at the same time. Out of this data, he mainly showed that there were 743 gunshot deaths, and this will really give the Congressman the urge to stop all these deaths.
The reason that I have such an intense interest in this topic is that my son was killed by a gun (not my own) that belonged to a person who only wanted to protect his household, but it fell into the hands of a child by mistake.  Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?
In the sixth paragraph, which is the paragraph above, he mainly used pathos. He explained in more detail about his child’s death. He really show an urge to why he wants the Congressman to support the gun control legislation when he mentioned that his child was killed by mistake from a person who wanted to protect his household and also when he mentioned the question in the last part of the paragraph, which is, “Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?”. By doing this, it will make the Congressman feel more pity for the child and also for him, and therefore he will carry out the action to stop all these gun accidents.
Once again, he here had a combination of the use of ethos, pathos and logos. When he asked some more questions for the Congressman to answer, he had already used a combination of all these. He showed pathos too when he mentioned that he believe in their rights as citizens of the United States, especially to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This is so as by doing this, he is showing part of an urge for the Congressman to carry out stricter actions. He is also showing some concerns for the citizens which the Congressman also needs to. The last part also gives the Congressman an urge too.
Yours sincerely
John Simmons
Ending the Letter Off like this also shows a sincerity in John Simmons as he wrote the letter to the Congressman, and it is also known as respecting the Congressman.

Letter of Analysis Tai Chen Yu (17)

Dear Congressman

I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state. As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident, I am writing to urge you to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot.

Pathos - Appealing to the emotions of losing a child. This is a good opening as the writer puts on a strong stand on his views. Ethos - ' you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state.' the writer putting the congressmen on a higher status than him.

The problem with guns is fairly straightforward: they make it easy to kill or injure a person. Did you know that, according to the F.B.I., approximately 60 percent of all murder victims in the United States in 1994 (about 16,000 people) were killed with firearms? Logos- As the writer presents cold hard facts and statistics in these four paragraphs. Ethos- In the fourth paragraph as he mentioned two experts from this field, thus increasing the credibility of the writer showing that he had done his 'homework and research'

The reason that I have such an intense interest in this topic is that my son was killed by a gun (not my own) that belonged to a person who only wanted to protect his household, but it fell into the hands of a child by mistake. Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?

Pathos - As the writer questions the conscience and heart of the congressman

Knowing all this, do you really think we can continue to allow citizens to buy guns so easily? If we continue making it so easy, our nation will continue to have gun-related domestic fatalities. I believe in our rights as citizens of the United States, especially the right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. These rights are unquestionably threatened by making it easy for the common citizen to buy a gun. Please, please vote for stricter laws.

Pathos - The writer pleas to the congressman and at the same questions the emotions of the congressman and even bringing topics about life to the appeal

Yours sincerely

Activity 3: Analysis of Letter by Ronak (15)

Dear Congressman

I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state. As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident, I am writing to urge you to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot.

The writer used PATHOS in the 1st Paragraph to show how he felt when he lost him son because of a gun accident. It is a good opening because the writer started of with a touch of emotion and serious mood.

It is much higher now.

In 1993, there were 24,526 people murdered, 13,980 with handguns, yet only 251 justifiable homicides by civilians using handguns.

The last 4 Paragraphs shows LOGOS as he used logical reasoning with supported accurate data to prove his point and make his conclusion. He also used a little of PATHOS as he showed the emotions as a respect for all the innocent people who died. Also ETHOS as while showing respect to the Congressman, not loosing his anger, he requested his to consider the points he pointed out.

The reason that I have such an intense interest in this topic is that my son was killed by a gun (not my own) that belonged to a person who only wanted to protect his household, but it fell into the hands of a child by mistake. Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?

PATHOS - As he is asking a emotional question for the tragic things that occurred as time flew past. Bringing his son in the topic again also changes the mood to a sad one as the writer wants the congressman to feel like a father with a lost son.

LOGOS as he is reasonably right for what the questions he has asked and EHTHOS as he wants, respectfully, the congressman to approve his consent.

Yours sincerely

John Simmons

ETHOS - Signs of with respect to show respect and Appreciation.

Activity 3: Analysis of Letter by Ong Ding Shan

The sender used the three rules efficently.

Ethos. He figured that since the congressman have a high status in the goverment, he would have the power to influence others to listen to him and he can change and add rules. If the sender is able to convince that having guns bring more harm than good, perhaps they would disallow guns in that state.

Pathos, he figured if he could "boot lick" the congressman, his chances of persuding would be higher. Therefore he state howmuch he admired them.

Logos, he stated many examples of surveys and research taken so that there are more reasons to believe the sender.

As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident, I am writing to urge you to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot.

Ethos. It is to make the congressmen think that he is in a higher status. Pathos. Showing Emotional as he lost a child to a gun accident.

The problem with guns is fairly straightforward: they make it easy to kill or injure a person. Did you know that, according to the F.B.I., approximately 60 percent of all murder victims in the United States in 1994 (about 16,000 people) were killed with firearms? It is much higher now.

Logos. It is to explain and elaborate further on what he said

The fact remains that a gun makes it easier to commit suicide in a fit of rage, depression, or under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Logos. He shows why are firearms dangerous.

For the fourth paragraph, the author had used ethos for first sentence and logos for the rest of the paragraph. He tried to give respect to people who owned guns. Logos to show and elaborate by giving statistics.

In 1993, there were 24,526 people murdered, 13,980 with handguns, yet only 251 justifiable homicides by civilians using handguns.

Ethos and Logos. He used statistics and doctor's recount to tell him more

The reason that I have such an intense interest in this topic is that my son was killed by a gun (not my own) that belonged to a person who only wanted to protect his household, but it fell into the hands of a child by mistake. Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?

Pathos. It is to reason his heart and give emotional appeals.

Pathos. to show how he felt as a citizen.

Dear Congressman

I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state.  As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident, I am writing to urge you to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot.
The writer is using Pathos as he uses emotional appeal and makes a simple claim that a matter is unjust. He makes an excellent opening by setting a serious tone and introducing the subject.
The previous three paragraphs involve the use of logos as statistics, facts and figures are used. These are useful in supporting the argument as they will tell more about how the ownership of guns can affect the suer and people around the owner. It also shows how easy guns can be obtained.
This paragraph involves the use of logos and ethos. The statistics show the use of logos and the use of notable figures like "Dr. Arthur Kellermann" and "Dr. Donald Reay" show the use of ethos. This will further help the writer as he will have notable figures to support himself.
The reason that I have such an intense interest in this topic is that my son was killed by a gun (not my own) that belonged to a person who only wanted to protect his household, but it fell into the hands of a child by mistake.  Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?
Knowing all this, do you really think we can continue to allow citizens to buy guns so easily?  If we continue making it so easy, our nation will continue to have gun-related domestic fatalities.  I believe in our rights as citizens of the United States, especially the right to LIFE, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.  These rights are unquestionably threatened by making it easy for the common citizen to buy a gun. Please, please vote for stricter laws.
These two paragraphs uses pathos as some emotional appeal and own experience are used. These will show how the writer has faced difficulty due to the ownership of guns.
Yours sincerely
John Simmons

Activity 3: Analysis of Letter by Joel Ho(11)

Dear Congressman

I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state.  As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident, I am writing to urge you to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot.
The author uses Ethos and Pathos here, mainly Ethos in "As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident" and Pathos in "I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state". He first compliments the congressman, then goes on to state his credibility, using a bit of emotional appeal.
The author uses Logos here, showing statistics, showing how firearms contribute to murders and injuries, and how much it costs to the government
Here, he also uses Logos, further showing how if proper gun controls were implemented, opponents of gun control would be wrong that the black market would still remain.
The author uses both Ethos and Logos in the fourth paragraph. He says the first sentence such that it seems he understands why people own guns, which places this under Ethos. The rest of the paragraph is facts and statistics again, placing it under Logos.
In the fifth paragraph, the author uses Logos again to give facts that he attained from two doctors.
The reason that I have such an intense interest in this topic is that my son was killed by a gun (not my own) that belonged to a person who only wanted to protect his household, but it fell into the hands of a child by mistake.  Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?
He uses Pathos here by asking a emotional question to the congressman. This question is such that it is questioning the congressman's own feelings.
He uses Pathos here asking the feelings and emotions of being a citizen of the United States.

Activity 3 analysis of letter Ray Chow 22

Dear Congressman

I have been so impressed with your past voting record, and I am hoping that you will continue to make excellent decisions on behalf of your state.  As a concerned parent who lost a child to a gun accident, I am writing to urge you to support the gun control legislation that will be on the November ballot.
(In this paragraph, the author is using Both ethos and Pathos to tell the congressman that he is doing a good job at having a lot of votes. Then, the writer pleads the congressman to listen to him. This way of persuading is very cunning and smart in a sense. )

(in this paragraph, he uses logos . It is obvious that guns are easy to kill a person, and that he also uses facts and figures everywhere. )

(Here, he uses pathos. He wants the reader to be angry of the people who buys guns on black markets and use them unnecessarily.)

(Pathos again is used. He want the reader to take sympathy of the people who where killed, and brainwashes the reader to take action immediately. Or something like that. )

(Yet again, pathos is used. It describes to the reader how urgent Is the need of having laws to stop this mess. )

The reason that I have such an intense interest in this topic is that my son was killed by a gun (not my own) that belonged to a person who only wanted to protect his household, but it fell into the hands of a child by mistake.  Do you want to be responsible for supporting legislation that would make more such incidents occur?
(This paragraph is using ethos to tell the reader that "Since my son was killed by a gun, I have rights to speak about this thing" attitude. )

( Wow. Here is a very well done paragraph by pathos. He is brainwashing the reader about the meaning of life. )

Yours sincerely
