Chapter 3(Family Matters) Jake Wee: Blog Question

Blog Question:

There are times when family affairs disappoint you. On page 79 ‘Outside the Box’, there are four suggestions on how to handle disappointment. What do you think of each suggestion? If you do not have issues that are family related (include the wider family, adoptive family, guardian), consider other disappointments in your life with other people who are supposedly close to you.

I think the first suggestion can be quite useful as when you're feeling down, naturally you will think that all the problems and situations are happening all on you at one time and what a bad day that had been. It is important to calm ourselves down and think through the problem and how it arise. We can also do something that affirms ourselves. Although sometimes when the problem gets too big, it is hard to keep in perspective and our thoughts run wild. But it is VERY important to sit ourselves down and calm ourselves down, and take it easy on ourselves, as it is not necessarily our fault. There was this one occasion when I screwed up big time at home. Apparently I forgot to lock the door tight as I was leaving the house. It would have been catastrophic if anyone had come in and stole our stuff. Fortunately, my Dad came back shortly and realised that the door was not locked. When I came back, I was not really prepared for what was coming my way. Both parents were back, and I got the worst scolding of my life. For one hour straight, they kept repeating the same point over and over again. I was also quite pissed, and felt down and out. Thinking it was all my fault. But then, I sat at a corner and calmed myself down and thought through the whole situation. Then I went to my parents room and apologized. It turned out that they were rather shocked. it was a good experience anyways.
