Chapter 4 Blog Question (Losing it)

I learnt many useful things I learnt from the eight articles in the chapter.

For the first article which, I learnt how to enjoy every moment you have in life. People should live every day like it is their last so that they will be able to live life to the fullest and cherish the opportunity which has been given to them to live. It is also important to tell your loved ones how you feel about them and how much you love them. This will make them happy and seeing your loved ones happy will definitely make you happy. You also do not know how long they will be there to accompany you. One moment they might be there but the next moment they are gone. You should also tell your friends how you feel so that the know you love them. It is essential to relax once in a while so that you do not stress yourself. If you feel stressed relax and tell your loved ones your problems and they might have a solution.

The second article teaches me how to handle the death of a loved one. This is very important as your loved ones will not be able to be there with you always and at some point in life, they will leave you. Many people’s lives are ruined because they do not know how to handle cases like these. No one should bottle up their sadness. If you feel depressed, go to a trusted friend and confide your sadness in them. I am sure they will understand. Join a support group. They can give you help and can make you feel better. Never forget to keep memories of your loved ones. This will reduce your grief by making you think that they are still there.

From the third story I learnt how to keep yourself entertained when you are stuck in a hospital. It is good to make friends with people around you so that you can chat with them and allow time fly by. Bring your laptop around so that you can play computer games and go on social networking sites to stay in touch with friends.

The next story teaches how to cope with feelings of guilt. Mostly feelings of guilt form when there is an accident caused by you but another person is hurt and suffers. You have to make yourself think that it is just an accident. Understand that the only person who can keep you from feeling guilty is yourself.

From the fifth story I learnt not ‘to judge a book by its cover’. You should not judge a person on how they are on the inside but how they are on the outside. You should also not blame yourself for something bad which happened to a loved one because of something they did to help you. You should be thinking that god has called for them and they did it to only spread some kindness.

“The day an angel was made” teaches me on how to handle the death of a close friend. There are many different ways to do this. One of them is to gather all the photos with your friend and make a scrapbook. This will make you feel that your friend is still very close to you. Also, keep items of significance like gifts given by your friend and listen to music which both of you used to like. This will trigger nostalgic memories of you with your friend forever.

The next story tells how to approach a friend who is acting strangely. Set time aside to talk to your friend instead of going right up to them and suddenly let the matter in front of your friend. Also, if he/she dislikes you to intervene, just tell that you are there for him/her and they have you to fall back on if necessary.

The last and final story teaches how to handle a disaster. Do not think that you are just one person and can’t do much. There is actually a lot that you can do. Firstly, you can raise a fundraiser but the easiest thing to do is to give stuff which you think might be useful. This might range from books to toys. Even if it affects only one person, you will still be helping someone and this might start a chain reaction of kindness.

That is all I have to say about all the eight stories which I have read through.

  1. Thank you for your systematic way of answering the question. I found it easy to follow your answer as you went through what you took away from each article chronologically.
I thought what you got out from the story was a bit different from the many comments made by other students. Most of them would say they learn to appreciate their health or what they have in life because there are people out there who have a missing organ or are ill because of some organ failure.

I like your response to the seventh story. I agree that it is important to tell your friend that you are there for him/her even if she/he does not like what you are saying to him/her. The main thing is to tell him/her you are supportive of him/her and that you are there to listen or help in any way that you are able to. You've got nothing to lose when you do that. It doesn't matter if your friend accepts it or rejects it but that you had offered the help.

There are times that you cannot help your friend at all if she/he insist on taking a path that you know will lead to no good. At the end of the day, people are responsible for their own choices. You aren't so you need to be clear about that.
